Meet Jamie and Shane. Jamie is our original apprentice – joining the team one month before the launch of greater.jobs, back in December 2016.
Shane is our current apprentice – joining greater.jobs in March last year.
Both our apprentices have enjoyed great success and brought real value to the greater.jobs team.
Read on to find out just why Jamie and Shane found a local authority apprenticeship such a fantastic career-starter…
Shane joined the greater.jobs Central Team at Wigan Council in March 2019 after finding the opportunity on our Apprenticeships & Early Careers page. Before joining the team, Shane had completed his A-levels at Runshaw College in Leyland and was looking to make a start in the world of work. After finishing college Shane initially worked part-time hours in a customer service role, but he wanted to start and develop a career in a new field.
Shane applied for and was successful in securing the apprenticeship role and began to work towards his Level 2 Business Administration qualification. During his time in the team, Shane has undertaken some fantastic pieces of work and suggested on-going improvements to the way things are done to improve overall outcomes.
We asked Shane a few questions to give a picture of his apprenticeship journey so far...
Why did you decide to start an apprenticeship in the public sector?
"I decided to apply for my apprenticeship position because it seemed like a great opportunity to learn new skills and utilise skills that I already possessed due to completing my A Levels.
It has been great being able to earn while I learn and work closely with colleagues, who I've had the opportunity to gain insight from which has been beneficial, especially with the projects I've been able to contribute to."
What have you gained from your apprenticeship?
"Since becoming an apprentice in the greater.jobs Central Team I feel my confidence has grown a lot when dealing with customers and other colleagues in the workplace.
Working in the team has also allowed me to improve my I.T skills and use skills that I developed during my time in college. I've had the opportunity to work on various exciting projects such as the creation of our new winter wonderland theme over the Christmas period!"
Would you recommend an apprenticeship to support a career path and why?
"I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship as I think that they are a fantastic way to gain first-hand work experience which is really valuable, and the support I've received from colleagues since joining the team has really helped me develop both personally and professionally.
I am really looking forward to completing my apprenticeship qualification and developing further during my time in the team!"
Jamie joined our team in November 2016 as a Project Support Apprentice, less than one month before the launch of greater.jobs. Jamie said “I completed a year at sixth form college, but I was keen to start my career and gain practical experience and this seemed like a fantastic opportunity which I had to apply for!”
Jamie was successful in securing the role, completing his Level 2 qualification in Business Administration and securing a permanent position as greater.jobs Support Assistant in November 2017. Jamie said "My apprenticeship was a great opportunity for me to develop my skills and learn new things. I had the opportunity to work closely with colleagues across Greater Manchester and contribute to some really exciting work, all whilst working towards my qualification. My confidence has improved and my people skills have developed massively."
Jamie was nominated for the Apprentice of the Year award at Wigan Council in 2018 and was runner up for the award!
He was successful securing a HR Advisor secondment position within the Resourcing Team at Wigan Council in 2018, this role included providing recruitment support to managers and colleagues across the organisation.
Jamie has since also completed his Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration alongside his job role!
Since re-joining the team in June 2019 following his 12 month secondment, Jamie has continued to contribute to the success of greater.jobs. Jamie said, "I have had the opportunity to complete some really exciting pieces of work since re-joining the team. We now have new location pages on the website, an all new advertising information pack and a number of other improvements have been made to the website which I've been involved in. My apprenticeship journey really has been great."
