Job Title: Clerk to School Governing Body

Salary: £10.02 per hour (11 hour session)

Contract Type: Casual contract

Hours: various hours employed on a casual basis

Based: Various Primary and Secondary Schools across Oldham

Role overview


Oldham Council Governor Support Service is currently looking to recruit a number of experienced Clerks/minute takers to help and support school governing bodies in the Oldham area.  This is a casual post.

This is a key role providing administrative and governance procedural advice to the governing body.

The role involves:

  • Being responsible to the Chair of governors
  • Providing advice to the governing body on governance, constitutional and procedural matters.
  • Liaising with the Chair, Headteacher and School Business Manager
  • Provide effective administrative support to the governing body including taking and writing up minutes, and administering documentation and other information of the governing body.
  • Ensure the governing body is properly constituted.
  • Manage information effectively in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Being familiar with the Department for Education (DfE) Governance Handbook

Key responsibilities


Clerks are expected to work from home with access to a modern IT system and the internet.  Clerks will be allocated a number of school governing body meetings per term across the year. 

Each school governing body holds between one or two full governing body meetings per term with a small number of additional committee meetings. For the majority of schools they are usually held after the school day, late afternoon or in the evenings. Willingness to attend evening meetings is essential, however, a degree of flexibly is required as there could be a need for additional meetings from time to time per half term.

Clerks are also expected to attend termly clerks briefing and professional development sessions held by the Local Authority and to also attend relevant training sessions.

Clerks receive a payment for each meeting the clerk which includes attendance at training, collection/delivery of documentation and pre and post meeting administration.


Key Requirements


Excellent literacy, numeracy, written and IT skills with attention to detail are essential along with ability to act in a professional manner whilst maintaining sensitivity and confidentiality.  

The job requires someone who is good at taking clear and precise notes, a good communicator with excellent customer care skills, who works well on their own using their own initiative and as part of a team.

Previous experience as a Clerk to a governing body or as a school governor would be an advantage.
