Tyler currently works as a Business Investment Assistant in the Economic Development Team at Wigan Council. The team provide independent support and advice to the business community in the Wigan borough, as well as promoting Wigan as a place for inward investment.

Tyler initially undertook work experience in the Places Senior Management Support Team at Wigan Council straight from school in June 2017. Tyler said, “the opportunities that came with being a staff member at Wigan Council seemed too exciting to not pursue. After just one week of shadowing colleagues, I knew it was the place I wanted to start my career."

Before entering the world of work, Tyler was Deputy Head Boy at Cansfield High School which involved writing & presenting speeches, taking care of the younger students and being an ambassador for the school.

From pupil to work experience, then apprentice to full time staff member, Tyler used his ability to learn new skills, great work ethic and drive to secure his permanent role of Business Investment Assistant, as well as winning the authorities rising star award after being nominated by his colleagues!

Tyler said, “since starting at the council I’ve achieved my Level 2 qualification in Business Administration, as well as a separate qualification in the delivery of public health schemes. I find it extremely beneficial that I’m able to work towards a qualification all whilst working a full-time job and earning a monthly wage.

The most enjoyable part of my journey at Wigan Council so far has been participating in the Bright Sparks programme, a scheme that’s set up to help young workers build their confidence and public speaking skills. I presented in front of a panel of senior staff and made new friendships with other young adults in different sections of the authority."

Tyler is currently working towards his Level 3 qualification in Business Administration and is keen to progress onto the next one. Inspired by members of the senior management team, Tyler looks forward to progressing within the organisation and hopes to lead his own directorate one day, ensuring that Wigan remains a clean, green and vibrant place with a thriving town centre.
