Welcome letter from Shoaib Mohammed, Director, Technical Services

Salford is a city where innovation, leadership and partnership working are contributing significantly to the increased economic vitality, growth and competitiveness of Greater Manchester and the region as a whole. Part of the Northern Powerhouse, it is an integral player in Greater Manchester’s ambitious growth and devolution agenda.

Salford’s growth strategy is transforming the city by investing in iconic buildings, new infrastructure and public realm, houses, education, health facilities, businesses and shops.
From major developments to city parks, revitalised waterways and green spaces, Salford is being rebuilt and now more people than ever before are choosing it as a place to live, work, invest and visit. It is also investing in its transport infrastructure, both to improve connectivity and to support the sustainable growth of the city.

Salford is connecting the city and its residents to the growing opportunities in and around the area and helping to secure jobs; investment and regeneration focus towards those areas in greatest need.
Salford is growing by capitalising on its unique identity, assets and entrepreneurial skills to provide real benefits for its growing population. We're committed to a target date of 2038 for carbon neutrality in Salford and we have developed an action plan to ensure we play our part in addressing the climate emergency. Our declaration fits into our council plan priority of making Salford a place to be proud of.

Salford is a leading partner in Greater Manchester’s ambitious Bee Network that represents a vision for a fully integrated London-style transport system which will join together buses, trams, cycling, walking and rail.

Our plan is to revolutionise travel across the city-region, making active travel the number one choice for travelling to work, to school and to the shops. But we can only do this if trips by foot or by bike are a safe and pleasant experience.

Salford has transformed key parts of its infrastructure already with the delivery of high-quality rapid bus transit routes and ground breaking active travel schemes. However as our city continues to grow there are many more schemes we need to deliver to achieve our vision for a more sustainable transport network. Salford’s pipeline of schemes represents a fantastic opportunity for applicants to develop their technical skills whilst helping to transform our transport network for the benefit of our communities.

"Having worked in Local Government for over 20 years and starting my career as an apprentice I enjoy being able to make a difference in Salford and playing a part in the city’s transformation.

"Seeing a project through from conception to completion and being fully involved at all stages is a privilege I’ve been able to experience over the years, and now I’m able to support others in doing the same. The continuous training and development offered has allowed me to progress both academically and professionally throughout my career with the full support of my managers."

Why work for Salford Technical Services

This is a fantastic time to join our Technical Services. The city is being transformed through unprecedented levels of development and investment and this growth trajectory is set to continue. Significant economic and population growth has been experienced in recent years across key strategic locations in the city including Central Salford and MediaCityUK, leading to new jobs and homes, and establishing ourselves as the fastest growing location in Greater Manchester. However, there is still much more to come with the future pipeline identifying the continued expansion of these core urban areas alongside significant opportunities for local towns and neighbourhoods to be transformed.

The council’s multidisciplinary Technical Services team is a key driver of this growth, playing a vital role in the forging of successful partnership arrangements with both public and private sector parties in pursuit of an ambitious placemaking agenda. It is within this context of sustained growth that we are now seeking to grow our Technical Services.

“I have been a member of the Engineering and Landscape Design Team at Salford City Council for around six years and was introduced to the engineering industry as an apprentice. Salford have provided me with frequent opportunities to further my knowledge and understanding of engineering practices and industry standards, from both college and university courses and arranging training events, to organising online workshops to learn new skills on everchanging industry software.

“I can attribute much of my development to date to the ongoing support and guidance provided by my team members and wider colleagues, who always show a willingness to provide help where it’s needed. The team dynamic is one of the many reasons I have enjoyed working for Salford over the last six years.

“I have been involved in a number of interesting highway development schemes and take pride in my role as a member of the engineering team that are consistently improving the city. My colleagues, the ability to work on such thought-provoking schemes and the flexibility the council offers are just a few reasons I have enjoyed my time here.”
